Going green

At Bowral Public School we have a lunchtime garden club where interested students plant, cultivate and harvest fresh vegetables to be used in 'the beehive'. Thanks to Mrs Cavanagah and Miss Wilson this club has continued all year.

(see story below about improved gardening and sustainable living opportunities at our school)

School environmental management plans work across the key learning areas of the curriculum and the whole school community.

We start with local sustainability and over time develop student understanding of how their work contributes globally.

Students and staff manage, observe and monitor our school's resources, waste, and physical surroundings, then take on activities to protect and improve our school and the local environment.

Your child will develop an understanding of:

  • the relationship between human activities and natural systems
  • sustainable management of the earth's resources
  • the inter-related nature of processes in the natural environment

We encourage you to support your child's 'going green' activities, and to help them to learn to care for the environment as part of their everyday lives.

A huge thank you to Mrs Peisley who is seen here receiving a grant from councillor Whipper from Wingecarribee Shire Council.

Last month Bowral Public School was successful in their application for funding towards a "Learning and Living Sustainability Project" under Wingecarribee Shire Council's Community Assistance Scheme.  $1477 has been awarded to our school to rejuvenate our vegetable garden with 3 new compost bins, vegetable netting and other gardening supplies.

The project is aimed at helping students to experience, first hand, sustainable living practices.  By composting waste, we aim to reduce waste to landfill while providing nutrients to our vegies.  The vegies will be provided to our fantastic canteen to produce yummy healthy goodies for all to enjoy.

We hope to receive the new items for our garden in the coming weeks so that we can get set for spring planting by our keen Gardening Club, headed by Mrs Cavanagh.
